September 13, 2010 – June 4, 2011
OPEN HOUSE - September 11, 2010
Students ages 8-18 are eligible to enter the Performing Arts
Division (PAD), which provides a strong sequential curriculum in
classical ballet and contemporary dance and pointe. The classical
ballet syllabus is rooted in the classical Russian tradition.
The curriculum embraces a wide-reaching contemporary dance
syllabus. The dance classes are taught by a renowned faculty
and enhanced by the artistry of musicians who accompany the
instruction.
Students are provided with performance
opportunities in the Strawberry Festival, A Student Showcase in May, and in Loyce
Houlton’s Nutcracker
Fantasy (please visit the Student Handbook and FAQ to read more about Loyce Houlton's Nutcracker Fantasy). A hallmark of the school is its special
relationship with Minnesota Dance Theatre
and partnerships with organizations that offer students more
arts experiences and challenges to achieve their best.
Also students, for an additional fee, have the opportunity to learn repertory and work with Minnesota Dance Theatre's dancers during the Minnesota Dance Theatre's Creative Workshop (Levels 4 - 7) showcasing the work in Up-close & Personal, In Studio Events.
We recommend that new students take a free placement
class to determine the appropriate entry level. Please sign-up by calling School Director Jeffrey Hankinson at 612-338-0627 Ext. 6 or email jeffrey.hankinson@mndance.org, or in case you are not able to attend scheduled placement classes.
Performing Arts Division Curriculum
The study of classical ballet is approached gradually, developing from the exercises at the barre. Those exercises are brought to the center, starting with simple combinations of steps. Only when the student gains the necessary strength and command of technique, can the beauty and wisdom of classical dancing be revealed.
Boys Program
Minnesota Dance Theatre & the Dance Institute wishes to invest in and grow our boys program in an effort to recruit boys for a comprehensive program in classical dance. Separate boys classes foster a sense of fraternity, stressing the athleticism indicative of male dancers. The Dance Institute offers limited financial aid/work study or scholarships, based on ability and financial need for those promising individuals who want to study ballet.
