Summer Programs

MDT&S offers dance classes throughout the summer comprised of Young Children’s Division (YCD) classes and Performing Arts Division (PAD) intensives.

Students from outside the MDT&S community are welcome to register. Please call our office at 612.338.0627 or email school@mndance.org to schedule a placement class before registering for a PAD intensive.

PREDANCE

This class is a joyful prelude to formal ballet and contemporary training. Young dancers will develop their understanding of rhythm and enhance their coordination as they explore fundamental dance movements in a welcoming, group-class environment. Creativity and self-expression are encouraged!

STORY BALLET CAMPS

In these fun-filled camps, young dancers discover how to bring a plot and characters to life through movement, music, and imagination. Students develop fundamental dance skills, enhance their coordination, and enjoy opportunities for creativity as they journey through engaging and enriching stories.

Session I, June 19-22: Peter and the Wolf

Bring a children’s classic to life with the help of Prokofiev’s inspiring score (recipient of the  Grammy Award for Best Album for Children).

Session II, July 17-20: Around the World

Explore stories from different nations, cultures, and moments in history! Featuring:

  • Callaloo: A Jazz Folktale (Caribbean folklore)
  • Ka’s Garden (Kab Lub Vaj): A Bilingual Children’s Book (Hmong story)
  • Thor, God of Thunder (Norse Myth)
  • The First Butterflies (Ojibwe Legend)

INTERMEDIATE

Young dancers train in ballet and contemporary aesthetics with a heightened focus on alignment, musicality, and terminology. These classes prepare students for entrance into the Performing Arts Division.

BOYS

Participants develop rhythmic awareness and athleticism, instill a healthy habit of exercising, and lay the groundwork for proper dance technique. Special emphasis is placed on creative thinking and attentive listening.

Lunch

Dancers can eat in hallway areas of MDT during breaks or with parent’s permission, leave the building for break. There is a Jimmy Johns and Starbucks across the street.

Parking, Parking Meters, Lots & Ramps

MDT&S is located at 528 Hennepin Avenue in The Cowles Center’s Arts and Education Wing (formerly the Hennepin Center for the Arts) on the 6th floor. You will enter through The Cowles Center main entrance at 528 Hennepin Avenue and walk to the elevators on your left.

Parking is available on surrounding streets and in many nearby ramps and lots. Parking ramps and meters may change their prices, especially during downtown events. Many parking ramps have discounted rates after 3 or 4 PM.

There are 15 minute drop off/pick up parking meters located on 6th street next to the building.

Biking

There is ample bike parking outside The Cowles Center. There are bike lanes on Hennepin Ave, First Ave and 6th St. This City of Minneapolis website will help you find bike lanes and paths.

Public Transportation

MDT&S is one block from the Warehouse District stop on the Light Rail system. Many bus lines run on Hennepin Ave and 6th St. Visit www.metrotransit.org for an easy way to plan your public transit route.
