Performing Arts Division Classes (PAD)

ycd2The Performing Arts Division (PAD), for ages 8 to 18, is designed to meet the needs of today’s dancer with a curriculum based in the classical ballet tradition and incorporating contemporary dance forms. The classes are taught by an accomplished faculty and include live piano accompaniment.

The schedule for Performing Arts Division for the 2018-19 school year is posted below. To achieve the goals of the curriculum, students are expected to attend all classes for their assigned level regularly.

Registration Information

Students ages 8 to 18 are eligible to register.

PAD students must enroll for the full year program and can expect to be in each level for two to three years before progressing to the next. The number of training hours will increase each year.

Students must be in Level III to be considered for pointe. Placement for pointe is made at the discretion of the faculty. 

Students have performance opportunities throughout the year. The partnership of company and school is a cornerstone of the MDT experience, giving young dancers the opportunity to train with the mentorship of seasoned professionals.

The Pre-Professional Trainee Program provides students interested in additional training opportunities the ability to partake in more classes and expand their experience. Pre-Professional Trainees are expected to attend all classes outlined in the PPTP schedule with the option of taking all Level VI classes. Audition is required for placement in this program.

The tuition amounts listed below are for entire school year. A one-time new family fee of $25 isapplied at the time of enrollment for new students.

Performance Information

Students will have formal and informal performance opportunities throughout the year, including Up Close & Personal showings and the year-end student showcase.

Loyce Houlton’s Nutcracker Fantasy

Enrollment in MDT’s PAD program does not guarantee participation in Loyce Houlton’s Nutcracker Fantasy. Dancers will be invited or may audition within their class time.

Strawberry Festival: A Student Showcase

The Strawberry Festival is the year-end performance for all students in the school, including PAD, YCD,and Boys Division. Please note this is Memorial Day weekend.


Class Attire

Each class level has a specific colored leotard. An order form will be posted here soon. Saturday is uniform-free day, unless there is an Up Close & Personal showcase.


Work Study

Minnesota Dance Theatre & School offers work study to qualifying families in the form of reduced tuition for hours contributed.  For more information, contact school@mndance.org.
